Finance consultancy for specific problems.

Project work rather than an ongoing retainer. Budgets and forecasts, cash flow planning, costing and pricing reviews, funding readiness and feasibility studies. A defined scope, a fixed fee and a deliverable you can act on.

What is included

The projects we are asked for most.

Each of these is scoped individually. Most clients come with a specific decision to make rather than a general request for help.

Budgeting and forecasting

An annual budget built from operational drivers rather than last year plus a percentage, with a rolling forecast to keep it current.

Cash flow planning

Thirteen week cash forecasts for tight periods, and longer horizon planning where the question is whether a plan is fundable.

Costing and pricing review

What each product, service or contract actually costs once overhead is properly allocated, and what that means for pricing.

Financial modelling

Multi-year models with the assumptions visible and adjustable, built to test scenarios rather than to produce one answer.

Funding readiness

The numbers, documentation and model a lender or investor will expect, prepared before you approach them.

Feasibility studies

An independent assessment of whether a new venture, location or line of business is likely to work financially.

How we approach it

A model is only useful if you can argue with it.

The common failing in financial modelling is a spreadsheet that produces a confident number with its assumptions buried three tabs deep. A model you cannot interrogate is a model you cannot rely on, and it will not survive contact with a lender or an investor.

Assumptions are visible

Every input sits on a single clearly labelled sheet. If you disagree with an assumption you can change it yourself and immediately see the consequence.

Drivers, not percentages

Revenue built from units, prices and conversion rates rather than a growth percentage applied to last year. That is what makes a forecast testable.

Scenarios as standard

A base case, a downside and an upside, because the useful question is rarely what happens if everything goes to plan.

Cash separated from profit

A profitable plan that runs out of cash in month seven is not a viable plan. The model shows both, and the cash view is usually the one that changes decisions.

You keep the model

It is handed over with documentation, and your team is walked through it. It is a tool you continue to use rather than a report you file.

How the engagement runs

Scoped, fixed and delivered.

01

Define the question

A conversation to establish what decision the work is meant to support. This often reframes the request into something more useful.

02

Scope and fixed fee

A written scope stating what will be delivered, in what form and by when, at a fixed price.

03

Information gathering

A single structured request for the data and documents we need, and interviews with the people who understand the operation.

04

Build and test

The model or analysis is built, then deliberately stress tested against the assumptions we are least confident about.

05

Review with you

A working session on the draft, because the people running the business usually spot something the numbers alone do not show.

06

Final delivery

The finished model, report or plan handed over, with a walkthrough so your team can use and update it.

Who this suits

Where this service fits.

Businesses facing a specific decision

A new location, a major capital purchase, a pricing change or a new line of business, where the financial consequence needs testing before committing.

Companies preparing to raise

Where a lender or investor conversation is coming and the numbers are not yet in a condition to withstand it.

Businesses that are profitable but short of cash

Where the profit and loss and the bank balance tell different stories and nobody has diagnosed why.

Common questions

Questions we are asked most often.

How is this different from the Virtual CFO service?

Finance consultancy is project work with a defined scope, a fixed fee and an end point. A virtual CFO is an ongoing arrangement where someone carries continuing responsibility for the finance function.

Many clients start with a project, because it answers a specific question with limited commitment, and move to an ongoing arrangement afterwards if the need turns out to be continuous.

What does a financial model cost?

It depends on complexity. A single entity three year model with straightforward revenue drivers is a modest project. A multi-entity group model with several business lines, foreign currency and scenario switching is considerably larger.

We scope and quote a fixed fee before starting, so the cost is known in advance rather than accumulating hourly.

Can you help us get a bank loan?

We prepare the financial side of the application: the historic numbers, the forecast, the model and the supporting documentation, and we help you anticipate the questions a credit committee will ask.

We do not arrange finance or act as a broker, and we cannot influence a lending decision. What we can do is make sure the application is not declined because of how the numbers were presented.

Do you carry out feasibility studies for new businesses?

Yes. A feasibility study tests whether a proposed venture is likely to work financially, covering the cost base, the revenue assumptions, the capital required and the point at which it would break even.

We aim to give an honest answer rather than a supportive one. A study that concludes a venture is not viable has saved you considerably more than it cost.

We are profitable but always short of cash. Can you help?

This is one of the most common reasons businesses approach us, and the cause is nearly always working capital: receivables collected too slowly, inventory held too long, or payables settled faster than necessary.

A thirteen week cash flow forecast usually makes the pattern visible within days. Fixing it is a matter of process and discipline rather than accounting, and it is generally achievable.
