Corporate Tax registration: a zero rate does not settle the question

UAE Corporate Tax registration, the general rate threshold and filing obligations are separate questions. A practical starting checklist for business owners.

One misunderstanding can cause unnecessary trouble: assuming that no Corporate Tax is payable means no registration or filing is needed. Assess your status and compliance obligations separately from the calculation of tax.

Start with the taxable person, not the expected bill

A UAE company, a natural person carrying on a business and an exempt person can have different rules. Free zone status does not automatically remove Corporate Tax obligations. Confirm whether the person must register, which deadline applies and what records are required.

How the general rate works

Under the general Corporate Tax rate structure, taxable income up to AED 375,000 is taxed at zero per cent and the amount above that threshold at nine per cent. Taxable income is not simply turnover: accounting profit is adjusted under the applicable rules. Qualifying free zone treatment and the rules for large multinational groups need a separate assessment.

Keep the return deadline on the calendar

The general deadline for a Corporate Tax return and payment is within nine months of the end of the tax period. For a calendar-year period ending on 31 December, that generally means 30 September of the following year. Begin preparing financial records and any required audit early enough to review the return properly.

Relief is not the same as automatic exemption

Small Business Relief requires an election and eligibility checks. Revenue history, the relevant tax period and exclusions matter. A qualifying free zone person cannot simply use that relief as an alternative to testing its own conditions. Check the current FTA guidance and applicable decisions rather than assuming that a small turnover removes the need to file.

If registration is overdue

Confirm your registration status and first tax period promptly. Do not assume that a penalty is unavoidable or automatically waived: the FTA has published a late-registration penalty waiver linked to qualifying first-period filing conditions. Review the current criteria before relying on it.

  • Identify the legal person, activities and applicable status.
  • Check registration, tax-period and filing details in EmaraTax.
  • Prepare supporting books and assess any relief separately.
  • Resolve missing records before the return is due.
