A better question is: what kind of finance problem would you like to become good at solving?

Some people enjoy finding the reason behind a margin movement. Others like connecting systems, cleaning messy records or making a process reliable. AI changes the tools available to each of them, but the work still needs someone who understands finance.

The direction is visible, even when titles differ

Singapore’s ACRA accountancy framework, updated in May 2026, embeds changing skills across accountancy career tracks. Its job transformation material identifies areas such as finance automation, finance data stewardship and transformation leadership.

That is evidence of changing work, not a forecast of UAE vacancies. The profiles below are our practical interpretation of directions to investigate. Employers use different titles, and an “AI” label does not make a role new or remove the need for experience.

1. Finance automation analyst

The work: understand a recurring process and reduce avoidable hand-offs. That might mean bringing approved files into a consistent format, routing an exception for review or preparing a draft reporting pack.

Skills to build: process mapping, Excel or Power Query, workflow logic, basic APIs, testing and accounting controls. You should be able to explain what happens when an input is missing or an automation fails.

First project: map a monthly data-preparation task using synthetic files. Automate the repeatable preparation and keep a visible exception list. Record what still requires a person.

2. Finance data steward

The work: help keep financial data understandable and consistent. Think chart-of-accounts mappings, customer records, reporting definitions and ownership of data-quality issues.

Skills to build: accounting structures, data validation, spreadsheet or query tools, documentation and the ability to resolve disagreements about definitions. Being precise about what a field means is central to this role.

First project: create a small data dictionary and a set of checks for a fictional sales ledger. Show how an incorrect mapping changes a report and how the issue is detected.

3. AI-enabled reporting or FP&A analyst

The work: prepare reliable analysis, investigate movements and use approved AI assistance for draft commentary or questions. The value is in explaining the business, not producing more paragraphs.

Skills to build: management accounting, modelling, Excel, Power BI or another reporting tool, clear writing and the ability to challenge an explanation. Distinguish a numerical observation from a claim about its cause.

First project: build a margin report, write your own commentary, then ask an AI tool to challenge it. Document where the tool helped and where you corrected it.

4. Finance systems functional analyst

The work: translate finance requirements into system behaviour. This could involve account mappings, approval rules, reports, integration requirements or user acceptance testing during an ERP change.

Skills to build: transaction lifecycles, requirements writing, a relevant ERP, testing discipline and communication with technical colleagues. You need to understand why finance asks for a control, not just where a setting appears.

First project: write a requirement and test pack for a fictional purchase-to-pay process. Include normal transactions and realistic exceptions.

5. AI controls and assurance analyst

The work: help assess whether an AI-assisted process produces supportable results and preserves appropriate review. Depending on the employer, this may sit within internal audit, risk, assurance or finance operations.

Skills to build: control design, evidence handling, sampling, data access concepts and model limitations. Specialist audit work may require further qualifications and experience.

First project: test a synthetic reconciliation workflow for false matches, missing inputs and unclear approvals. Write findings that a process owner can act on.

6. E-invoicing implementation coordinator

The work: bring finance, operations, IT and a service provider together around invoice data, testing and issue resolution. This may be a project responsibility within an existing role rather than a permanent job title.

Skills to build: billing and tax processes, data mapping, project tracking, test design and the ability to work from current official requirements. A tool demonstration is not a substitute for understanding your transactions.

First project: create an invoice-data map and a testing checklist for a fictional business. Read our ASP selection guide to understand the questions a project team needs to ask.

7. Finance transformation lead

The work: decide which improvements matter, coordinate people and systems, and measure whether changes deliver a useful outcome. This is normally a progression role requiring experience across finance and change delivery.

Skills to build: prioritisation, stakeholder management, process economics, systems awareness and change leadership. You need to say no to an impressive pilot that does not solve a worthwhile problem.

First project: compare three improvement ideas using a simple business case. State the expected benefit, evidence required, owner, dependencies and risks.

Choose one direction and collect evidence

Pick the profile closest to work you already understand. Review actual job descriptions in your target market, identify recurring skills and build one small project that demonstrates them. Avoid collecting tool names without being able to explain a completed task.

Register your skills and career direction with Finaxil if you are interested in relevant suggestions, learning or potential project collaboration.
